As part of their arrangement with Activision, Sony got to exclusively reveal a new gameplay trailer for Call of Duty: World War 2 during their E3 conference today. The game is set to release November 3, as Activision revealed during their press event for the game.
You’d be forgiven for concluding that the success of the next Call of Duty game is a foregone conclusion. The fact is, however, that the series has seen a few sales dips in recent years, thanks largely to an ever more futuristic setting for the games.
That said, Activision is dialing that back with the next game—like, all the way back. Call of Duty owes a lot to its origins as a World War II shooter, despite being just one among many, back when games set during that part of history sold like hotcakes.
There’s a renewed push to revisit the era nowadays, though, and Activision has answered the call by delivering perhaps the most interesting take on the war to date. Set amidst the deadliest conflict in human history, CoD: WW2 looks to clear the deck, setting the franchise up for a new beginning and a return to form.
Based on the footage shown, the game features all sorts of evolutions of the already stellar gunplay the series is famous for. You’ll get to use flamethrowers to clear out trenches. It also looks like dual-wielding is coming back as well. A pair of 1911s was featured prominently toward the end of the trailer.
It’s hard to tell what portions of the video were culled from the campaign, and which were from multiplayer, but it seemed like a bit of both was shown. In one scene, characters are tasked with escorting a tank across the battlefield. If that’s a feature of a new multiplayer game mode, it’ll be a first for the series.
That pretty much sums up the trailer. No new details were revealed during Sony’s stage show. We’ll keep you updated if anything new pops up. In the meantime, you can pre-order the game right nowCall of Duty: WWII – PlayStation 4 Standard Edition to gain access to the upcoming private Beta.
