In this guide we’ve provided you with all the basic information you’ll need as well as a list for some of the best video projectors to buy for your home.
Need a projector screen? You might be tempted to simply use a wall as your projector screen at home, especially after seeing that the really good ones don’t come cheap. But if you do that, you’re basically wasting the full potential of your projector – most especially if it’s a really expensive 4K projector. If you’re already invested in projectors as your entertainment medium, why not go all the way and buy a good projector screen? In this guide we’ve also provided a list of the top projection screens you should buy to go along with your video projector.
How to choose the best home theater projector for you
Gone are the days when projectors are only found in schools, offices or seminar venues. Today, there are even households that are skipping the need for an actual television set because a home theater projector is more than enough to give them a pleasurable viewing experience.
Of course, this is not a TV. It requires space and a screen or a blank and clean wall for you to use. A home theater projector can give you screen sizes of 30 inches or even up to 150 inches. Some projectors can offer crystal clear images even at screens larger than 150 inches!
If you have always dreamed of having your own cinema at home and you enjoy watching movie marathons with your family and friends, then watching from a home theater projector is a fun and awesome way to do it.
Video: 6 things to know about home theater projectors
Because there are many choices available in the market, the challenging part comes when you have to choose the ideal home theater projector according to your needs. These projectors offer a wide variety of features that can be useful or useless to you. In order to make sure you’re getting the best home theater projector, you have to consider certain factors and determine what you actually need.
Here are some questions you can start asking yourself:
What is my budget for a new video projector?
There are countless home theater projectors available in the market. In fact, you can get ones that will cost you less than a hundred dollars while others cost a whole lot more than that. The Epson 4K home projector we are featuring below will make you spend at least over a couple of thousand. That of course does not include the screen, or repainting of your wall, or even 3D glasses if you wish to watch 3D movies at home. The first thing you have to do is determine how much you’re willing to spend so you can start your search on projectors within that price range.
What will I use it for?
Are you going to watch movies? Will you use it for presentations? Do you need a projector for games? Do you want a projector that you can use for outdoors? These are only some of the several questions you need to ask yourself. While other projectors can do pretty much everything, there are some that are only great for presentations and not for movies or the other way around.
What is the usual type of content I’ll be watching?
Will you be watching HDTV or is your video collection mostly in Blu-ray? Are you trying to look for a good projector that can be used for 4K content? Or do you simply need one that lets you plug in your laptop so you can watch YouTube videos? Choose your home theater projector according to what you are usually trying to view. Remember that even if you are trying to view a 4K movie, if you don’t have a 4K projector, then you cannot maximize its clarity and detail.
Where will I use the home theater projector ?
Finally, one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself is where you will be using your home theater projector. A projector is ideally used in theater-dark rooms so you can get the most out of the picture quality. If you have such a room at home, then you don’t need a very bright projector with extra-black levels. However, if you will be using it in your family room that has a bit or a lot of light throughout the day or even through the night, then you need a projector with brightness levels of at least 1,500 to 2,000 lumens or more than that.
Qualities to look for in a home theater projector
There may be features that are not available across all kinds of projectors but there are some that must be present in any type of projector so that it can be considered one of the best. If these qualities are found in a home theater projector you have shortlisted, then you can be assured that you’re making a great decision should you decide to purchase it.
High resolution – At least full 1080p HD
Whether or not you intend to view only standard quality content all the time, it is best to still consider a home theater projector that offers high resolution. After all, we are heading to the future and most video content will surely be in at least 1080p pretty soon. Having 4K-enhancement capability is just a bonus.
Check the brightness levels and black levels of the projector as well. As mentioned earlier, if you have a completely dark theater room at home, then something below 2,000 lumens on brightness may already be enough. On the other hand, black levels gives you more detailed images on video content. Especially in dark areas of an image, greater black levels lets you see the detail in best quality and more clarity.
Long-life lamp, replaceable
A lot of people take this for granted but we’re placing this as one of the most important qualities to look for. The lamp of the projector must be replaceable. Just like light bulbs in your home, the lamp can die after a certain number of hours. Most projectors offer lamps that can operate up to thousands of hours. Some don’t. If the lamp isn’t replaceable, then your projector can be considered disposable because it wouldn’t work without the lamp, right? A long-life lamp is even more ideal because it lessens replacement costs you have to spend for in the future. For instance, the Meyoung projector we included on this list offer up to 30,000 hours. Now, that’s impressive.
Several connection ports
There are few Wi-Fi capable home theater projectors in the market today but you can definitely live without this feature for now. Especially since you will most likely have a separate player to connect with your projector like your DVD player or a storage device, then Wi-Fi connectivity is good to have but not an absolute necessity. What you need though are several connection ports.
These connection ports can include a VGA port especially if you have an older model laptop or computer that you want to connect to the projector. If you intend to watch HD quality films, an HDMI port is necessary. A USB port is also a great addition for easier connectivity to a variety of storage devices and media players.
Many home theater projectors already have integrated speakers; however, many are not powerful or clear enough. While you can always connect your projector to a larger and more powerful set of speakers, it’s nice to have a built-in speaker to eliminate this additional need.
Internal fan – Must not be too loud
Just like most of our electronic gadgets at home, a projector can get really hot especially after using it for many hours. These home theater projectors usually have an internal fan to help cool it off. Older models can get quite loud especially when the projector is getting way too warm. Thankfully, models that have come out today promise a more silent internal fan to keep your projector cool.
Warranty coverage, reliable customer support
Last but definitely not the least, it is best for you to choose a home theater projector with a decent warranty coverage. While most products you will find especially those that you purchase brand new come with warranty coverage, it is better if to know what this warranty actually covers. Furthermore, what use is the warranty if you don’t even have someone to call for assistance? A great customer support can be very helpful too.

Best 4K video projectors
With the world of video technology progressing so quickly, affordable 4K television sets are quite common in the market nowadays. 4K content is best viewed on larger projection screens, which is why most 4K TV’s are at least 50 or 65 inches wide. Imagine having an even larger screen size for your home theater. The best 4K projector is out there and thankfully, this was released within our lifetime.
This is the latest in TV technology and it’s just great that it has now even been picked up by manufacturers to place in their projectors. Of course, your home theater system will truly become a whole lot better if you can view 4K content from it.
Do you really need a 4K projector?
We are emphasizing on “really” here because purchasing a 4K projector is not very simple. It costs a whole lot of money and one of these can already get you a few 4K TV’s or even a pre-loved budget car. With that being said, you should be truly decided that you’re willing to shell out the right amount of money for the assurance that you’re getting the best 4K projector.
Now, you must realize that there aren’t plenty of 4K content out there as well. Not a lot of movies come out with a 4K version and TV channels haven’t really moved to the 4K platform just yet. However, there are sources of 4K content such as Netflix or Amazon that makes us believe that there’s more to come very soon. There are also 4K videos available on YouTube, by the way.
The good thing about having a 4K projector is that you know that this will be the future. This is the latest among home theater projectors so if this one’s now available, why settle for an older model with older features? After all, we’re heading to the 4K direction anyway.
Furthermore, the best 4K projector comes with HDR compatibility. It can play HD content with super impressive picture quality and very vibrant and brilliant colors. Most of these projectors can even enhance your standard definition content to HD and you high definition content to near 4K quality. That alone gives you enough reason to say that you really need a 4K projector.
Finally, if you’re setting up a home cinema, better use the best equipment. There’s no doubt that a 4K projector is exactly what you need. This is what digital cinemas are made for. Yes, these projectors may cost you quite a bit of your savings; however, you have no reason to head to the cinemas anymore because you can have the same amazing quality right in the comforts of your home. That leads to a whole lot of savings too!
What to look for in the best 4K projector
Now that you have decided that you’re getting a 4K projector, you can’t just pick one randomly. After all, you will be spending a lot of money and you better be sure that you’re putting your dollar where it’s worth it. Yes, it can be expensive but by choosing the best 4K projector, it will be a practical choice in the long run.
For you to make a wise decision, you need to know what to look for in a good kind of 4K projector. Aside from having the 4K feature, here are other qualities you must consider:
We’re putting price range on top of this list because as we mentioned multiple times earlier, 4K projectors can be quite expensive. You have to determine your budget first and start your search from there. Know that you shouldn’t be intimidated if the first projector you see will cost you your life savings. There are still some models out there that are fairly priced and quite affordable. In addition, you must realize that this is where we’re headed — 4K content. You can use your 4K projector for several years and its features will still be useful and good as new.
Connectivity includes HDMI ports, USB ports, LAN ports or even Wi-Fi compatibility for wireless connection. Take your existing gadgets into consideration if they can be used with your 4K projector.
1,500 lumens are ideal but you can go more than that especially if you don’t have a theater-like dark room at home. Brightness is important because what use is your 4K content when you can barely see from the projection screen?
The black levels are highly important too. Deep and rich blacks will ensure that you can see incredible detail even in darker scenes of a movie or TV show. This also adds to the detail you can see no matter the lighting environment.
Of course, screen size matters. We’re pretty sure you’re using a projector because you want a larger screen size just like in the cinemas. In that case, this feature is very important. You must check, however, the distance where you have to place the projector from the screen. For example, the Sony 4K projector can give you only 42 to 85 inches if the projector is placed at least 8 feet from the screen. If you have a very small room and the placement of your projector can’t go beyond 8 feet, then 85 inches is the maximum screen size you’re getting. If you have a larger room or if you’re watching from your 4K projector outdoors, you can get screen sizes of over 150 inches.
Lamp life and internal fan
A home theater projector, whether 4K or a conventional one, must have long lamp life. Some lamps can last for 6,000 hours and beyond. This is an important factor to consider especially since projectors are pretty much useless without the lamp. And since 4K projectors are costly, it is safe to assume that replacement parts including the lamp can be very expensive too. A 4K projector’s long lamp life will certainly save you a lot of money from replacement costs in the future.
The internal fan is highly important too. These are usually placed in front or at the back of the projector. Note that if the fan is placed at the back, there should be a clearance space between walls and the projector. However, if the fan is placed in front such as the one in the Sony 4K projector, then there’s nothing to worry about. A fan’s purpose is basically to keep your projector cool especially if you’re using it for long hours.
Now that you already know what to look for, it’s time to go shopping for the best 4K projector. Here are a couple of the best 4K Projectors we’ve found in the market today as these have met high standards, offered the ideal features and have received high ratings from very happy owners.

Now Epson might not be the first brand that comes to mind if you’re looking for gadgets for home entertainment. This is perhaps the reason a lot of consumers search for models available with other brands such as Sony. It might be that many of us still think that Epson is all about computers and printers. While this projector is great for use in the office or in school for presentations, it is even better for home cinema use. Truth be told, Epson has been voted number 1 when it comes to image quality in projectors. This is coming from the TFCinfo: US Projector Brand Customer Perception and Preference Study, Projectors 2015.
If you really want to have a 4K home theater projector, and you are willing to spend a bit but not as much as the price of the Sony projector above, then the Epson Home Cinema 5040UB 1080p 3D 3LCD Home Theater Projector is your best bet.
Best 4K projection screens
A lot of people dive into extremely large purchases of home theater projectors without really thinking how they will be using it. So they have a blank white wall in their living room and they think that’s enough. The truth is that a projection screen is important not only because it will make your home cinema look “real” but simply because it is the best way you can get most out of the picture quality of what you’re watching — especially when it comes to 4K content.
Truth be told, you can easily DIY a projection screen. Some people paint on their wall, use a portable screen with a tripod or get a floor rising model, which is pricier but most ideal of all. It’s like having a very slim TV but better, especially if you will be using the best 4K projector.
Now there are many projection screens available in the market today, even as much as the number of projectors you will find on sale. However, there are only a few that are good enough to match with your 4K projector. Just to clarify, you can still use your 4K projector even with a DIY projection screen. However, you can maximize the quality you can get if you will be using a screen that’s made specifically for projector use. If you will be setting up a home cinema, this is the next best purchase you need to get after choosing your 4K projector.
To help you find the best projection screens, here are a couple of recommendations that we have for you. These were carefully handpicked from a wide selection of screens. These stood out because of the excellent features they offer as well as high ratings and impressive customer reviews.
Silver Ticket 4K Ultra HD Ready HDTV (6 Piece Fixed Frame) Projector Screen
Silver Ticket is one of the most popular manufacturers when it comes to projection screens. In fact, for many consumers, Silver Ticket is the first brand that comes to mind. It is quite easy to install and most models are fairly priced. We’re saying fairly priced because they’re not necessarily cheap but the quality is far from cheap as well. Best of all, these Silver Ticket projection screens are aesthetically pleasing and would surely look great in your home theater setup.
It is highly recommended for you to watch Silver Ticket’s installment videos that are easily available on YouTube. These would make the installation process very easy for you. However, you still have an option to get expert assistance if you should need help.
The Silver Ticket 4K Ultra HD Ready HDTV (6 Piece Fixed Frame) Projector Screen is available in a variety of sizes from 92 to 175 inches. This projector screen can also be adjusted horizontally in case you don’t want the full size. You can do this by simply adjusting and securing the top and bottom mounting brackets.
What makes the Silver Ticket 4K Ultra HD Ready HDTV (6 Piece Fixed Frame) Projector Screen stand out is its exceptionally wide viewing 160-degree angle that won’t cause any resolution loss. It provides a 1.1 gain as well.
It works great whether you’re watching HD, Full HD (4K) or even 3D content. The Silver Ticket 4K Ultra HD Ready HDTV (6 Piece Fixed Frame) Projector Screen is made with a heavy duty 2 3/8-inch beveled aluminum frame. It is wrapped in a light-absorbing black material made of velvet so that you can get the best quality images at all time.
While it may seem like a pricey projector screen, the Silver Ticket 4K Ultra HD Ready HDTV (6 Piece Fixed Frame) Projector Screen still gives you the bang for your buck. It is close to the price of other similar products and best of all, it has the reputable Silver Ticket brand. Furthermore, we must say that most reviews coming from owners are made up of high ratings and praises for this projector screen. If you’re getting a 4K projector, you might as well spend a little bit more with a good projector screen such as this one from Silver Ticket.
Elite Screens Spectrum Home Theater Electric Motorized Drop Down Projection Projector Screen
Another popular brand when it comes to protector screens is Elite Screens. This particular model, the Elite Screens Spectrum Home Theater Projector Screen, is one of their most popular products. It has received hundreds of very satisfied reviews from owners and you too can enjoy as much as they are once you have this installed in your home.
You can choose from two models: the MaxWhite and the Acoustic Pro UHD. If you’re an absolute purist when it comes to projectors and screens, then the Acoustic Pro UHD might be a good choice for you. Professionals as well as owners of projector screens say that the acoustic material used on a screen makes the sound better. However, if you have already set up great speakers in your home theater, we must say that this doesn’t matter.
To avoid confusion, the information we’re placing here is about the Elite Screens Spectrum, 100-inch 16:9, 4K Home Theater Electric Motorized Drop Down Projection Projector Screen although other sizes of this projection screen have almost the same features. This is the MaxWhite model. It has a matte white front material with a 1.1 gain. It offers up to 180 degrees of viewing angle. It is 4K Ultra HD and Active 3d ready. It is mildew resistant and very easy to clean. In addition, it has received the GreenGuard GOLD Certification (UL 2818).
The Elite Screens Spectrum Home Theater Electric Motorized Drop Down Projection Projector Screen features a very durable casing that you can install directly to your ceiling or wall. It is fully assembled when shipped to you so you can simply install easily using instructions that come with the manual. However, if you still need assistance in installation, Elite Screens can send a professional to help you out.
Each purchase of the Elite Screens Spectrum Home Theater Electric Motorized Drop Down Projection Projector Screen comes with an infrared remote control, a detachable 3-way wall switch and a 12V trigger cable. For your well-deserved peace of mind, the manufacturer is even throwing in a 2-year warranty with each purchase.
Top 5 projection screens for every budget
If you’re interested in the best projectors for a home theater setup, then a projector screen should be on your to-buy list. Don’t waste your tech on a white wall at home, no matter how pristine or spotless it is. Certain products are meant to be used in very specific ways. Projectors go with projector screens, period.
Likewise when using a projector at school or in the office. A projector screen helps in making sure all the information that you need to convey during an important presentation is clearly read by everyone in the room. Simply turning off all the lights won’t cut it.
How to choose the best projector screen for your needs
There are a lot of options out there if you’re looking for the best projector screen or best portable projection screen. But not all of them are really worth the money, even the cheap ones, especially if you’re looking for a long-term investment that will last several years.
And there are also expensive projector screens that come with features that you don’t really need. The trick is to find something that fits exactly to your needs. If you’re going to use a projector screen exclusively for school or business presentations, then you probably don’t need something from our list of 4K Ultra HD projectors. If you’re looking for something portable that you can easily take with you to a friend’s house, then a 150-inch projector screen should be the last thing on your list.
Thankfully, shopping for the best projector screen is easier than shopping for the best projectors. Still, it can get confusing if you don’t know where to look and what to look for. To save you the trouble of browsing through dozens of products, we compiled five projector screens that are worth looking into.
Best cheap projector screen (Best value)
Let’s start off with a very budget-friendly projector. Contrary to its name, the Best Choice Products Manual Projector Projection Screen isn’t the overall best projector screen out there. But if you only count budget projector screens, it is easily one of the best options. It’s super affordable, easy to use, and produces images with excellent detail.
When extended in full, the projector screen is actually square, despite looking rectangular in marketing materials. It has an 84-inch x 84-inch frame with a diagonal length of 119 inches, making it very suitable for the typical 4:3 and 16:9 standard aspect ratios preferred by many. Naturally, the square frame makes it less suitable for other wider configurations.
The screen is anti-static and easy to clean, though the edges are prone to wrinkling. Thanks to its lightweight frame, it can be easily mounted to a wall or attached to the ceiling using a pair of sturdy hooks. The screen needs to be manually pulled down, though. Be sure the hooks are well screwed into the ceiling when going for a ceiling setup to avoid accidentally pulling the entire thing down.
Like many other projector screens, it has a 1:1 gain. This means that the light projected onto it doesn’t get absorbed, which allows the projected image to appear in optimal quality. If you’re watching an animated movie with particularly vibrant colors like the Guillermo del Toro-produced The Book of Life, you can trust the projector screen to keep the vibrancy intact. It also has a 160-degree viewing angle, making it a great choice for a home theater setup for a big family.
Overall, the Best Choice Products Manual Projector Projection Screen is an excellent product. (They should really think about changing its lengthy name, though.) We definitely recommend it if you’re in the market for a budget projector screen for school, office, and home use. However, if you’re looking for something exclusively for a home theater setup, you might want to look at other, more expensive choices.
Best cheap 100-inch diagonal portable projector screen
One minor issue with the Best Choice Products model above is that it can be a hassle to set up, though its bracket is fairly lightweight for transport. If you really want the best portable projection screen that you can pop out and store with extreme ease, then we recommend the VIVO 100-inch Portable Projector Screen.
The projector screen is attached to a sturdy tripod that can be easily folded, making it easy to carry from place to place (or classroom to classroom, if you’re a school teacher). You can set it up as fast as you can store it. It basically works just like a plug-and-play device. Well, sort of. The screen height can be adjusted quickly and locked in place with minimal effort. And you can bank on the lock to stay in place during the entirety of your school or business presentations.
This pull-up projector screen comes with a diagonal length of 100 inches and a 60-inch by 80-inch frame. This means you’re pretty much locked to an aspect ratio of 4:3. It’s great for school and office use, but not so much if you’re into wide-screen cinematic experiences at home. Still, with its very friendly price, we’re not complaining.
The screen has a white matte finish that spreads out the light in every direction and a 1:1 gain that makes sure the light reflected is pretty much the same as the light projected. This means pictures won’t be dull-looking and bland compared to when simply using a white wall as a projector screen. It also comes with a black backing and black borders to help in preventing light penetration and enhancing contrast, respectively.
The viewing angle is slightly more restrictive at 120 degrees, though. But it’s not a deal-breaker. We recommend the VIVO 100” Portable Projector Screen to those looking for the best projector screen with hassle-free portability. It also comes in a smaller 84-inch version if you want even more portability.
Best 4K Ultra HD-ready projector screen
With the popularity of budget 4K televisions, 4K streaming, and gaming systems capable of rendering games in 4K, it has become increasingly apparent that 4K technology is the future. So it’s not really surprising that projectors have also entered the fray. There aren’t many 4K-ready projectors out in the market yet, but you can check out our section for the best 4K projectors currently available on this page. (Spoiler: they’re expensive.)
We have two 4K-ready projector screens on the list, and the first one comes from a well-known name in the projectors business, Silver Ticket. The Silver Ticket STR-169120 has an impressive diagonal length of 120 inches, making it perfect for the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. It boasts a 160-degree viewing angle with no resolution loss. This means you won’t lose out on the glorious 4K experience if your couch isn’t positioned directly in front of the screen, for whatever reason.
The screen isn’t just a piece of cloth or sheet. It’s specifically made of projection screen material to bring out all the explosions in whatever Michael Bay-directed movie and all the underwater colorfulness in Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. The screen is made of vinyl, which makes cleaning it easy and effortless. Don’t use liquid on it, though.
The STR-169120 is supported with aluminum frames wrapped in black velvet fabric to help in absorbing excess projected light. It comes with the usual 1:1 gain to make sure the projected light stays as is. If you want to go overboard, you can go for the more expensive High Contrast Material version of the projector screen. It’s also available in Grey Material, Silver Material, and Woven Acoustic Material.
Though the projector screen is advertised as easy and quick to set up, it can actually take up to an hour or two to get it done, with the center balancing rod the most common area where people have had trouble with. You can watch how-to videos on YouTube to get an idea on how to install it. The STR-169120 is on the expensive side. But it’s worth every penny if you’re looking for the best projector screen that’s capable of handling 4K content.
Best motorized drop down 4K projector screen
If you want a traditional drop-down projector screen with more oomph than the Best Choice Products model, then we recommend breaking the bank for the Elite Screens Spectrum instead. Like Silver Ticket, Elite Screens is also one of the most popular names in the projectors scene.
One of their signature products is the Spectrum series of projector screens. They are available in different aspect ratios and diagonal sizes. For this list, we’ll focus on the Elite Screens Spectrum 100-inch projector screen that comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It is HDR-ready, which translates to even more vibrant colors, and is able to handle 4K and Active 3D. Perfect if you missed out on watching the Sandra Bullock starred Gravity in 3D.
The screen – housed inside an all-steel bracket, along with the silent motor and infrared receiver – can be easily controlled with an infrared remote control. The bracket can be mounted on the ceiling or on the wall and comes in a black or white finish. Just pick whatever color suits your home theater setup.
By default, the Elite Screens Spectrum 100-inch projector screen comes with the “MaxWhite” matte screen material. It offers the standard 1:1 gain for optimum picture quality, mildew resistance, black backing to ensure no light passes through, and 180-degree viewing angle. That last bit may seem more impressive than 160 degrees, but you’ll hardly find any use for it. Well, unless you watch movies from odd and questionable positions. Like directly adjacent to the projector screen.
You can also go for the moiré-free “AcousticPro UHD” screen material. It has a 1:0 gain and is best used when you have an elaborate speaker system that needs to be placed behind the projector screen. If you’re looking for the best projector screen and money is not an issue, we definitely recommend grabbing an Elite Screens Spectrum 100-inch projector screen. It ships fully assembled, too, unlike the Silver Ticket model.
Best 100-inch traditional drop-down projector screen
Last but not the least we have another product from VIVO. If you’re looking for a traditional drop-down projector screen that has a 16:9 aspect ratio but not as expensive as Silver Ticket and Elite Screens products, then the VIVO PS-M-100 is for you.
Unlike the VIVO portable projector screen, the PS-M-100 is available in 16:9 aspect ratio, making it more ideal for watching movies at home (or in the office, if you have the guts). It comes with the usual 1:1 gain that helps in keeping the projected light stay as it is on the screen and the standard black backing that prevents light penetration.
The black borders also help in boosting the contrast and absorbing excess light for better quality. The PS-M-100 doesn’t exactly offer an eye-popping experience similar to the two 4K-ready 16:9 projector screens above, but it gets the job done. The screen easily retracts in and out of the bracket, which can be wall- or ceiling-mounted and can be locked in place if you don’t want to use the entirety of the screen.
The one downside to the PS-M-100 is that the screen sometimes comes out wrinkled, which could lead to slightly distorted images when watching movies. It’s not all that bad and the bottom pole helps in straightening out the screen. Still, it’s worth noting.
Obviously, the PS-M-100 isn’t as portable and easy to set up as its portable counterpart. You’re better off looking at other products if you’re looking for the best portable projection screen. Or, in other words, scroll up and give the VIVO 100-inch Portable Projector Screen a second look.
