Fumito Ueda has created some of the most unique and memorable games in the last 15 years. He’s served as director and lead designer on such hits as Ico (2001), the highly acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus (2005), and recent The Last Guardian (2016). Despite being in development hell for almost a decade, the PS4 action-adventure title was praised for its story and art direction.
During a talk at the Nordic Games Conference, Ueda was asked what kind of game he’d be designing next. While staying secretive about his next project, he did offer a big hint (provided by GameBolt):
“I cannot talk about the details [of my next project] but… Shadow [of the Colossus] came out of the experience with ICO, [going] from a closed world to open world. When I completed Shadow, there was a moment where I wondered if I wanted to go around an open world again…Now I’ve completed The Last Guardian and spent so many years in that game, maybe I may go back to the Shadow-type environment.”
Considering that Shadow of the Colossus is arguably his best and most successful game to date, fans of the PS2 title are no doubt eager to see Ueda return to an open world style.
