Another year, another fantastic E3 where plenty of excellent titles were shown off and revealed. But similar to last year, it was a Nintendo game that had most people talking. While in 2016 it was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, this year we can’t get enough of Super Mario Odyssey. What we saw from our favorite plumber’s next adventure was impressive enough to earn it IGN’s prestigious “Game of the Show.”
But despite seeing numerous hours of gameplay thanks to Treehouse Live, Nintendo had one last trick up their sleeve. On the final day it was revealed that Super Mario Odyssey would boast a co-op feature, allowing a friend to join in on the fun. While it isn’t as robust as playing Super Mario 3D World, you’ll be doing more than collecting Starbits (Super Mario Galaxy) as the second player.
As you can see from the video above, one player will control Mario while the other controls Cappy. In co-op mode Cappy can be used to fly around, stun enemies, and perform various actions. The video also shows Cappy getting swallowed by an enemy, which means it isn’t entirely invincible.
Switch owners can explore New Donk City and the other vibrant locations, either alone or with a friend, when Super Mario Odyssey releases October 27, 2017. It will mark the first sandbox Mario game since Super Mario Sunshine, which released for the Gamecube almost 15 years ago.
